Rabbi Raphael Stohl was raised in Los Angeles, CA. After completing high school, he enrolled in Yeshiva Kerem B’Yavneh, a renowned yeshiva in Israel, where he developed close relationships with his Rebbeim, Rabbi Moshe Stav and Rabbi Mendel Blachman, two of the most outstanding disciples of the prominent Rabbis, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Kol Torah, Rabbi Eliyahu Mishkovsky, Rosh Yeshiva of Kfar Chassidim, and Rabbi Simcha Zissel Broide, Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron Yeshiva. Building on the strong foundation he received from his home, Rabbi Stohl acquired both his derech halimud (method of Torah study) and hashkafas hachayim (philosophy of Jewish life) during his formative years in Kerem B’Yavneh.
Rabbi Stohl returned to America and enrolled in Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan in Manhattan where he studied under Rabbi Hershel Schachter, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, Rabbi Mayer Twersky, and Rabbi Chaim Packer. During his ten-year tenure at Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan, Rabbi Stohl received Rabbinic ordination (semicha) in practical halacha and was accepted as a fellow in the distinguished Kollel Elyon for Advanced Torah Study. He concomitantly led a daily chabura (in-depth Torah study group) for the yeshiva students and was appointed to the prestigious position of Sho’el U’Meishiv – researching and answering complex questions proposed by the yeshiva’s students.
Rabbi Stohl is a founding member of the Hollywood Community Kollel. During his six years in the kollel, he has taught numerous classes in Talmud, Halacha, Jewish philosophy, Tefilla, and Tanach. In addition to numerous essays in multiple Torah journals and his “Daf B’Iyun” (extensive notes and sources on the first perek of Maseches Berachos), Rabbi Stohl recently published his first full-length Hebrew sefer – Toras HaKavod, on the various mitzvos and concepts of honor and respect in Halacha and Aggada.
Rabbi Stohl is married to Malka Schlesinger of Los Angeles. Malka has an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering and a Master’s in biostatistics and currently works as a biostatistician. They have six lovely children – Eliyahu, Yaakov, Leeba, Yitzchak, Avraham, and Yosef Meir.
